Coupon Insert Preview: 10/5/08

by Mindi Cherry on October 4, 2008

in Basics, Coupons, general

When I did this post and this post, I received comments and many emails thanking me for explaining the reasoning behind buying multiple copies of the newspaper each week.

With that in mind, I thought that I would start a weekly feature where I provide a link to what coupons will be in the newspaper, point out the best coupons and let you know how many newspapers I would be buying if I were still building my stockpile…and why.  Even though I am in “stockpile maintenance mode”, I still buy as if I am building, since I just donate any excess non-perishables.

All I ask is this:  if this is a feature that you would like me to continue to do each week, please leave me a comment and let me know (since Thursday-Sunday are already crazy for me with trying to get the grocery posts up….and this would be another post that I could only do during that time period).  Thanks!

Here’s the link to the coupons that will be in the newspaper this week.  While the value of the coupons I receive in the Philadelphia Inquirer are occassionally different (they change the values of the coupons according to which part of the country they release them), it is usually a very accurate listing.

Coupons of note:

Arm & Hammer Essentials Rebate (up to $3.50):  this will be limit 1, I’m sure

Fleischmann’s Yeast (strip):  $.45 (I do quite a bit of baking in the Fall & Winter and after doubling this coupon gets me yeast strips for about $.60)

Kleenex Lotion Facial Tissue:  $.40 (Kleenex will likely go on sale 10 for $10 before the expiration date)

Karo Syrup:  $.40 (back to me being a baker…coupons on corn syrup are rare and corn syrup has a long shelf life)

Playtex:  $1 (haven’t been a whole lot of coupons for this recently)

Ronzoni Smart Taste:  $1 (it’s been going on & off sale at 4 for $5 since it came out…this coupon translates in to $.25 pasta)

Campbell’s 25% Less Sodium Condensed Soup:  $.40/2 (Campbell’s always likes to exclude the cream soups from coupon deals and now is the time that soup is going on sale.  I always like to keep the creamed soups on hand for last-minute meals/casseroles)

Betty Crocker Warm Delights:  $.50 (my husband loves these and these go on & off sale at 3 for $5, which means $.66 each after doubling….They are almost ALWAYS part of GM/Betty Crocker catalina deals)

Betty Crocker Potatoes:  $.35 (my oldest can eat a whole box by himself.  these go on & off sale at 10 for $10 which makes them $.30 after doubling)

Green Giant Valley Fresh Steamers:  $1 (these are fabulous – both the ones with and without sauce.  Local stores have put them on sale at 10 for $10 lately, which makes them free.  Even if they don’t go 10 for $10 before it expires, they are $1.66 at Acme this week, making them $.66 each)

Totinis Pizza Rolls:  $.35 (Acme puts these on sale 10 for $10 all the time!)

The rest of the coupons in the Betty Crocker/GM insert are pretty good (except the cereal one – better cereal coupons are found online) and, as I mentioned, Betty/Crocker/GM is very generous with the Catalina/Instant Savings deals at the stores.  I get more free stuff with this insert each month than any other (and I get lots of Box Tops in the process!)

Knorr Rice or Pasta side Dish:  $.72/2 (these go on sale for $1 frequently, which makes them $.25 each after doubling)

L’Oreal Bare Natural Mineral Makeup:  $5 (since this is new, CVS & RIte Aid will probably have an ECB or SCR rebate deal on this.  A $5 coupon will almost certainly turn the purchase in to a moneymaker!)

Skippy Peanut Butter:  $.40 (usually the peanut butter coupons require you to buy 2, so if this is off 1 in my local paper, this can be combined with a 3 for $5 sale for $.86 peanut butter)

Those are just the highlights.  As you can see, if you are able to find the newspaper at your local Dollar General (and your version of the paper has all 4 inserts), just the Green Giant & Ronzoni coupons justify buying multiple copies.

So how many copies would I buy if I were in “stockpile building mode”?:

anywhere from 7-10 copies

Note:  This should be obvious, but I just want to mention this:  PLEASE RECYCLE  your newspapers!

It does look like a good coupon week. Somehow I signed up for something that had P&G send me a copy of last week’s insert. That was a nice surprise in my mailbox. :)

I enjoyed this post and your comments/tips on each. The yeast reminded me to mention to check the dates. I guess not many people bake bread and that yeast can sit a while. I just noticed a strip I bought was expired. I keep it in the fridge and it still worked.

there is also a kroger cat deal going on for the yeast strips. I will have to find my paper telling the details and come back.

I think this post is very helpful, most just tell you the coupons. The details are great, especially for beginners. I am not a beginner but my mom is so it will be nice to sit her down at the computer and let her read what you have wrote.

I always tell her to buy as many papers as people in you household if the coupons are good but she thinks I am nuts, lol.at least she is getting 2 a week now. She still isn’t clipping them and they are a mangled mess. I went through them last week to get out the really good deal ones for her and it was so annoying.

Oh, no more EntreCard for you? Darn! lol I still don’t understand it, but I will stick with it for now.

Have a nice weekend and catch you on twitter!

Bella
PS: Are you or were you ever on RMC Chit Chat? I am “Isabella, MI” from there…but I really have been out of the couponing loop for a couple of years now…I need to get my butt back into couponing mode!!!

Thanks for posting this! I have a raincheck from Giant for the GG Steamers (10/10), so I will just hold off for another day to get them!

Maybe we’ll get lucky and there will be coupons for the boxed GG veggies for the sale at Acme too!

Yes, keeping posting these (well as long as it doesn’t interfere with doing the newsletter). I only bought 5 papers today, totally forgot that Ronzoni Smart Taste coupons were in it. Somehow I missed that 2 papers were missing the Campbells insert(maybe because the cashier was STARING at me while checking the papers?).

Yes, please continue this each week!!!

Just wanted to share an idea for recycling those newspapers… I take all of mine to the nearest pet store. They really need them for the puppies!

11 Mindi October 5, 2008 at 7:28 am

I was gone all day after 9:00am yesterday….I’m thrilled that so many of you find this helpful! It is something that I will continue!

Heidi: ALWAYS sign up for those deals, especially through P&G. If nothing else, the P&G home mailers have included a coupon for a free bottle of Cascade’s version of Jet Dry the last few times!

Steph – thanks for the reminder about checking the dates…especially since so many grocery stores seemed to have moved the yeast from the refrigerated Dairy section to the baking section!

Tosha: one of the reasons I decided to do it is that my blog stats tell me that many more people have been finding me through searches for “basic” coupon info. With everything that is happening, I guess there are more people looking to save money. I had to learn all of this myself and it took me longer to learn to save so much money….just trying to speed up the process for the newbies! (and thanks for the Catalina deal…I think Acme and Genuardi’s are having the same one!)

Bella: I’m still on EntreCard (for now)…it’s on the front page, not the page you get when you click on an individual post. I’ll be away most of today as well (party at my father’s and then the Steelers game tonight), but I will catch you on Twitter! (oh – and I’ve never heard of RMC…can you send me a link?

Debbie: I had 18 coupons for the GG Steamers last time they went 10 for $10. Be sure to check out this week’s Acme post, because there are links to more $1 GG Steamers and Boxed coupons!

Stacey: I was there at 9:15 on Saturday and out of the 30 papers they had, I had a hard time finding many that had all the inserts (and many of the inserts were mangled). There was a new cashier there…I miss the one who calls me “The Newspaper Lady” (and it won’t affect the newsletter…this post typed up much quicker than I thought it would!)

Mindy (love the name, even though you spell it wrong ;-) ) – thanks for the tip!

Sunny & Michelle: thanks for letting me know that you want to continue!

I’ve never commented before but I love the service you provide for everyone. I am a newbie stockpiler and I actually just started my stockpile with the green valley frozen veggies. Our GG Steamers with the 1.00 coupon and no sauce are .23 cents in Georgia. I have 8 bags now and only spent $1.84 on them, its a start and funny enough it excited me.

Thanks for everything that you do for us!

Mindi – I love this. It is really helpful for me to know what is coming out in the future papers. Thanks for doing it.

I just stopped by the local coffee shop (my one non-frugal vice) and there were 7 copies of the Sunday paper there. The girl at the counter said that I can have ALL of them for free if they are still there at closing.

The shop is literally 3 seconds from my house – so here’s hoping I’ll score at least a few copies free at 5pm today.

Cheers!

This is a really nice idea – thank you!

This would be very helpful–this whole couponing this is very overwhelming for someone with ADD! You’re information is really helpful!

16 Jenny October 6, 2008 at 12:00 am

What a great idea! Thanks so much for taking the time to type it all out and share!

I have been working on a stockpile for several months, but I mostly have household items and no food. I can never seem to get the coupons matched up with the food sales.

I’m looking forward to more of your posts!

Hi Mindi,

I stumbled across your site by doing an internet search….what a find! I am an HR Manager and trying to put together a list of resources for my employees to save money and tips on how to live frugally, especially in this economy. I know they will find your site helpful. Keep up the good work! :)

Ruth
