Genuardi’s Scenario # 1 (Summer Savings Marathon)

After cursing Genuardi’s for weeks for being overpriced on almost everything, I discovered today that I can pretty much get all of my food from now to the end of time for $28 with their Summer Savings Marathon.  Well, maybe not until the end of time. but I can tell you one thing….my Kleenex and Pop Tart needs will be met through the winter!

The very first thing you need to do is grab a whole bunch of these at your Genuardi’s (thanks for the picture-steal Gina!)

In it are a whole bunch of coupons…it’s where I got all my Kleenex coupons (ok - confession time - I grabbed about 50 of them.  But I couldn’t help it.  Every time I turned an aisle someone kept handing them to me and I don’t think that I am exaggerating when I say that they literally had 1000 of them lying around on every counter and endcap!).

According to the ad, you are only allowed to do one of these deals per day, but I know that some people have been able to do them back to back.  However, the people at my Genuardi’s absolutely despise me (ever since I went postal on a little-old-lady-cashier who made me stand there while she matched up every coupon with every item….despite the fact that THE REGISTER WILL BEEP IF SOMETHING DOESN’T MATCH SO THERE IS NO NEED TO DO IT MANUALLY and so slowly that my ice cream melted and even then she didn’t scan half of the coupons yet insisted that she had until I had to call the manager over to straighten it out AND she wanted to interrogate me on where I got all my coupons because NOBODY buys more than one paper per week…..not that I’m still bitter about it or anything….).  I’m not pushing my luck!

But here’s the deal I did today:

  • 2 Tava Brazillian Samba:  BOGO at $3.99 (I used a $1.50 off from my sidebar coupon printer)
  • 3 Chocolate Turtle Chex Mix at $1.99 (used 2 $.50 from the paper and a $.55 from my coupon sidebar…all were doubled)
  • 8 Bags of Sugar-free Lifesavers at $2.35 (used 4 BOGO coupons from the paper)
  • 1 Jolly Time 97% FF popcorn at $1.99 (used $1.50 coupon from here)
  • 5 Kleenex Tissues at $1.50 (used 5 $.50 coupons from the Olympic Insiders Guide pictured above…all were doubled)
  • 2 6-packs Diet coke (used the in-ad coupon to make them $3 for the pair)
  • 4 Pop-Tarts (used the in-ad coupon to make them $1.50 each)

Total after coupons:  $28.21

And I got a $20 Catalina!

Actually, I didn’t…only a $10 one printed and I had to go to Customer Service for them to give me a $10 gift card…so here is an important tip for you.

Remember this list?  The Tava IS on it, but it must not have been entered in the Safeway/Genuardi’s system as part of the deal (sort of understandable that an item or two may have been missed - the list IS 38 pages long!).  But I knew it was on it so I asked them to pull out their master list (note to my readers who go to the Genuardi’s I do…you know who you are….the people at CS didn’t even know what I was talking about when I mentioned this deal.  If you go to “that one”, be prepared to have to explain it to them, or find the manager and have him check you out) and they confirmed that I should have received a $20 Catalina, not a $10…they gave me a $10 gift card.

But that works out even better for me…..

Tomorrow I am going and getting all my Kleenex for the next 6 months:  25 boxes at $1.50 with 25 $.50 coupon (from the Olympic Brochure) that will be doubled.  With tax, it will be $13.25 and I will pay with the $10 Catalina and $3.25 off the Gift Card they gave me.  In return, I will get another $20 Catalina and still have $6.75 on my gift card.

I plan on doing about 3-4 deals a week, just continually rolling my Catalinas until Genuardi’s runs out of food or my husband threatens to divorce me because we can’t fit anything else in the pantry in the basement.  I’ll post my scenarios as I do them.  In the meantime, Check out Gina’s Mr. Linky for other Genuardi’s/Safeway Shoppers to see what they are doing!

  1. LOL, I will be aware at ‘that store’ and I sooo need Kleenex, we are out! I may start with that deal tonight!

  2. I don’t like Genuardi’s and never go there, but I may have to make a trip or two. We can always use Kleenex.

  3. Mindi, will you marry me? (I think I’ve asked you that before, I could become a stalker at any time, beware ;) ).

I LOVE this blog. It truly is my FAVORITE “how to work the deals” web-site.

Darlas last blog post..You know you’re an Iowan if….

  4. After visiting “that store” today I still don’t like Genuardi’s. I don’t know who in their right mind would do their normal shopping there. The variety sucked and most sale items weren’t stocked. The little brochures were at the registers(and only the open ones) so the cashier only gave me 2. Now I need to come up with a clever way to get more. Any ideas?

  5. Stacey - live 2 blocks from me! I just got back from a different Genuardi’s. Check your mailbox!

  7. Your story about the little old lady cashier cracked me up! And thank you for posting your scenarios at my site. I love seeing all the deals everyone gets. I love promos like these because I can stockpile my own needs (cereal, rice, salsa, etc.) and also donate A TON of food to our local food bank for such little money.

  8. How do you get them to double all of your coupons? My Safeway will only double 4 per transaction with a maximum of $2.00.

  9. Is this Olympic brochure specific to Genuardi’s are does it have manufacturer’s coupons in, too? I’d love to take advantege of some of these deals at my local stores.

  10. Since I am local to that store as well, I shall have to keep an eye on things. I hate it when stuff just does not get recorded as part of the deal there. I have had that happen before and mostly on the free movie ticket promos.

They are manufacturers coupons, FYI though, coupons do read do not double, but aren’t coded with a 9, so it will depned on your cashier

  12. Kristin - every store is a little different I think, since most grocery store managers are allowed to tweak the rules a bit depending on the needs of the area (or what they can get away with…if your store is the only grocey store for miles, they don’t have as much of an incentive to get you in there, since you really don’t have a choice)

Julie - Diane answered your quetion, but I just wanted to point out that, since they are Man. Qs, you can use them anywhere else if it gets you a better deal (for instance, the Save $1 wyb 3 Coke 2-Liters? 2-liters are on sale 10 for $10 at Acme, so it makes more sense to buy them there this week!)

    K. Anne - is it any wonder that the parking lot of “that store” is almost empty? Especially compared to the Acme & Giants in the area!

  13. ROFL. Most definitely no wonder. I am going to go and try my luck again there tonight. I am dreading it though. Sigh.

  14. I am finally getting to the loving it part of this deal, and of course I am out of Ragu coupons (but well stocked, and since Ragu is a staple around here that is a good thing)

I noticied the Eating Smart Drinks are 10 for $10, and the Kleenex are still on sale, so I am going to try mixing some of them into my orders.

Oh, and $2 Cottonelle coupons are now in the blinkie machines!
